Allen Earman has more than 25 years experience in the development of
electronic and optical systems such as active and passive optical
communications components, high-power solid-state laser systems, and
projection and wearable display systems. He holds a BSEE from Virginia Tech
and an MS Optics from the University of Rochester (NY). Currently, he is the
Director of Packaging at Novalux, Inc. where his efforts are focused on the
development of component packaging for high-power visible lasers for display
applications. He has been a continuous member of IEEE for 30 years,
beginning as a Student Member and now is a Senior Member of the IEEE.
Since relocating to the Santa Clara Valley in 2000, he has been an active
member in the CPMT Chapter where he was Chapter Secretary for two years and
for the past two years has been Chapter Chair. During his tenure as Chapter
Chair he guided the CPMT Chapter by setting goals and organizing the Chapter
financial position - increasing Chapter revenues past the $150k mark in 2005
- and expanding the Chapter's activities by starting a CPMT Student Chapter
at San Jose State University, working with the SCV Section K-12
organization, inaugurating a new Packaging Prize at the Region 6 Central
Area Micromouse competition, and working with other area organizations on
joint programs.
In 2006, Mr. Earman chaired the SCV Section Audit Committee for the first Self-Audit for IEEE Headquarters. Mr. Earman is a member of CPMT, LEOS, EMS, COMSOC, and ITS of IEEE and is a member of SPIE - the Optical Engineering Society, where he has chaired the Society's Audit Committee for the last 4 years - and the Society for Information Display (SID). From 2001-03, he chaired the joint IEEE-CPMT-SCV-SEMI symposium on Photonics Packaging (PhoPak); in 2006-07 he co-chaired the SPIE conference on Photonics Packaging and Integration at Photonics West; and he is Assistant-Chair for the Optoelectronics sessions at the 2007 Electronics Components and Technology Conference (ECTC) for CPMT. He has served on several conference program committees for IEEE, OSA, and SPIE, and on the ANSI X3B11 Technical Sub-Committee for Optical Storage Interchangeability standardization.
