Style Guidlines for Your Transactions Manuscripts

Use the following style guidlines when preparing your manuscript. The text of your manuscript must be submitted in electronic format (WORD, PDF, etc) as described in the Manuscript Central submission instructions.

The Transactions follow the IEEE's Information for IEEE Transactions, Journals, and Letters Authors. Copies are available from

Manuscript Style

Wword processed.
Double space all text.
Single column, with reasonable margins.
Try to use a common, 10 point font.
Length should not exceed roughly 6000 words.
Refer to reference items with numbers in square brackets.
example: "... theory by Boyle [2]."
- Author's first initials followed by last name, title, periodical, volume, inclusive page numbers, month, year.
  For books, use the following format:
- Author's first initials followed by last name, title, place of publication, publisher, year, chapter or page numbers (if desired).
Footnotes should be numbered.
Refer to all tables and illustrations in the text. The initial references to illustrations and tables in the text should be numerically sequential.
It is best to type tables into your word processor or text file. Treat nontyped tables like illustrations. Be sure they are suitable for photo reduction.
Use the metric International System of Units. If custom or convenience dictates British-American units for specific uses, the metric equivalent should also be given in parentheses.
Use symbols and abbreviations defined by the IEEE standards. Different symbols or abbreviations must be defined when they first appear in the text.
Clearly identify all subscripts, superscripts, Greek letters, and mathematical symbols.
Clearly distinguish between 'zeros' and 'ohs.'
Mathematical expressions must be legible.
Do not provide derivations which are easily found in existing literature. Merely cite the reference.
Avoid the use of company and trade names and proprietary terms, whenever possible.
Avoid "nationalisms" such as: "our space program," "power systems throughout the nation," "research supported by the federal government."
The language of the IEEE Transactions is English. If English is a second language for you, please enlist the help of others who can assist you with sentence structure and grammar.

Style for Illustrations

IEEE cannot provide art or drafting services. You must still submit hardcopy illustrations, or send them as electronic files. Please use the following styles for your illustrations:

Originals should be sharp, clear, and of good contrast.
Media must be printed output, as from a laser printer, or fine drawings done with ink, such as India ink. Paper must be white.
On graphs use only the coordinate axes or, at most the major grid lines, to avoid a dense result.
All lettering must be large enough to permit legible reduction down to the column width of 3.5".
Hand lettering must be done with mechanical ink.
Try to use similar font sizes and styles throughout all illustrations.
Number each original on the back or at the bottom of the front.
Leave captions off of illustrations.
Photographs must be glossy prints of good contrast and gradation, and any reasonable size. Black and white preferred. Color acceptable.
Do not substitute scanned images for photos.

Manuscript Sections

Your manuscript should consist of the following sections:

Concise title.
Abstract.
Index Terms (Keywords).
Introduction.
A main body of the manuscript, which may contain sections that you define, such as Theory, Experiments, Results, etc.
Conclusions.
Acknowledgments, if needed.
References.
Appendices, if needed.
